What are some necessary and sufficient conditions for consciousness of computational mechanisms?

Time: Saturday, 2.11

Room: Room 1

Authors: Jan Broersen

Abstract: In this talk, I will try to shed some light on the question if computational mechanisms, like LLMs, can experience phenomenal consciousness. I will do this by trying to come up with necessary and sufficient conditions for phenomenal consciousness of mechanisms in general (I consider humans and animals also to be mechanisms of some kind). In my discussion I will talk about emergence, the Integrated Information Theory, the self, the preservation of the self over time, mechanisms for self-reflection and self-knowledge representation.
